About This Site

Ambul Dive Site

Ambul is one of only two Beginner-rated dive sites on Fuvahmulah, making it accessible to Open Water divers and those easing into island conditions. Located on the central west reef, the site features lush coral cover, excellent light conditions, and the ever-present possibility of thresher sharks passing in the blue.

The gentle reef slope descends gradually, giving less experienced divers time to acclimatise to depth and current before tackling the island's more advanced sites. Despite its Beginner rating, Ambul is not boring — the healthy coral supports rich reef life, and the proximity to deep water means pelagic sightings are always possible.

Dive centres often use Ambul as a first dive for newly arrived guests, letting them check equipment, adjust weighting, and get comfortable with Fuvahmulah's water conditions before progressing to the signature sites.

Best Conditions

Year-round. The west-central position provides shelter in most conditions. Ideal for days when other sites are too rough for less experienced group members.

What You'll See

Marine Life at Ambul

Thresher Sharks

Pass in the blue water beyond the reef edge. Not a primary thresher site but sightings happen regularly — Fuvahmulah's deep water is never far away.

Reef Fish

Dense populations of butterfish, angelfish, damselfish, and wrasse across the healthy coral. More species diversity than you'd expect from a 'beginner' site.

Healthy Corals

Lush hard coral cover including table corals, staghorn formations, and brain coral. The gentle slope and good light make this some of the island's healthiest reef.

Diver Tips

How to Dive Ambul

Fuvahmulah's most accessible dive with genuine pelagic potential. Where else can a newly certified Open Water diver see thresher sharks pass in the blue while exploring pristine coral? Ambul bridges the gap between reef diving and Fuvahmulah's famous pelagic encounters.

Perfect first dive on Fuvahmulah — use it to check equipment and adjust to conditions
The shallow profile means long bottom times. Use the extra time to look closely at coral and small reef life
Keep one eye on the blue water beyond the reef edge — threshers and other pelagics can appear without warning
This is an excellent site for practicing buoyancy over live coral before attempting the more fragile sites
