About This Site

Neregando Dive Site

Neregando is another of Fuvahmulah's prehistoric harbour channels, this one on the northern coast. The channel features sheer walls that drop into deep water, with caverns and overhangs carved by centuries of wave action. Thresher sharks weave between coral bommies at the channel mouth, using the deep-water access for their dawn ascent.

The site's northern position means it receives different current patterns to the south coast sites, creating its own microecosystem. The sheer walls inside the channel host encrusting corals and sponges, while the coral bommies at the entrance attract cleaning activity from both reef fish and pelagics.

Neregando is less visited than the famous southern sites, which means less diver traffic and more undisturbed marine life. For experienced divers looking for a quieter alternative to the popular sites, this is an excellent choice.

Best Conditions

Year-round — the north coast is often sheltered when other coasts are exposed. Best cavern exploration in calm conditions. Dawn for thresher sharks.

Marine Life at Neregando

Thresher Sharks

Weave between coral bommies at the channel mouth during dawn ascent. They use the deep-water access adjacent to the channel.

Bigeye Barracuda

School in the channel, particularly concentrated near the entrance where current flows.

Bigeye Trevally

Hunting packs in the channel. Often shadowing the barracuda schools.

Batfish

Shelter inside the channel caverns. The calm water areas attract groups of 5–15 individuals.

Diver Tips

How to Dive Neregando

Fuvahmulah's most atmospheric channel dive. The combination of prehistoric caverns, sheer walls, and thresher shark sightings at the channel mouth creates a dive with genuine exploration character. Less crowded than the famous southern sites.

The caverns and overhangs are the unique feature — explore them when current is mild inside the channel
Position at the channel mouth for thresher sharks — they pass through the bommie field rather than entering the channel
Less diver traffic means marine life here is less habituated — move slowly and you'll be rewarded
The sheer walls inside the channel host encrusting life worth examining up close — bring a torch

The overhangs and shallow caverns are safe with a torch and guide. We don't enter fully enclosed overhead environments — these are open-backed caverns with natural light. Your guide will assess conditions before any cavern exploration.
